Yoga- Ancient Discipline For Optimal Health Or Religion?

May 27th, 2011

There are many questions and doubts that abound in the minds of many people who are skeptical in regards to the practice of Yoga and whether or not it is a religion. Some people get a feeling that it is a religion due the kind of dedication and concentration they see involved in those who practice it. The truth of the matter is that the practice of Yoga does not come anywhere near any definition of religion as we know it. Yoga does not emphasize any particular philosophy or doctrine as it were. Yoga is only concerned about the psychological and physical disciplines that brings together the learning of how to combine breathing exercise, postures and meditation to achieve the good health of body and mind.

May be it is because the roots of Yoga are the same as those of Eastern Mythology, many people will tend to associate Yoga with Eastern religions such as Hinduism. It is true that both have their roots and origins in India but basically that is where the similarities come to an end. The psychological and physical procedures that go on in Yoga have no relationship whatsoever with the religion of Hindus. It also should come as a pleasant surprise to many that the dedication that people learn while practicing Yoga, will almost always enhance the person’s religious beliefs just as they believe currently.

Yoga may not be a religion per se but it also comes packaged with a set of good practices that people who practice it are supposed to observe. It could be the learning of these ethics or practices that make many people believe it could be a religion, since they resemble what many people learn in their particular religions. The principles that Yoga practitioners learn include: Avoidance of violence, Chastity, Desisting from stealing, the practice of truthfulness as well as avoidance of any form of greed. There are also five disciplines which include: self-discipline, self-study, purity, contentment and centering on the divine.

Temperament science is religion

May 21st, 2011

Reality –Having existence of matters and materials is reality. Activities of materials both for living and non-living are for some purpose is matters. Matter is transit stage of material. These are system, concept, procedure, law, custom, ritual, signal, impulse, talk, speech and planning etc., and converting to documents or records. But about all facts of matters is thought evolved in mind called temperament. That means temperament world is functioning behind seen world. Then there is a source of temperaments where all temperaments are evolved.

As per medical science in brain mechanism there are gyri and sulci (folding and depression of minute billions nervous cells) for various purpose known as cerebral cortex (like hear, see, smell, recall, intelligence etc) in both right and left cerebral hemisphere in the name of  lobes which facilitate to nurturing the outside impulses  and creating various  thoughts. Exactly hormonal system (gland system) in human body is also help to co-coordinating the activities of human body cooperating with nervous system.

That means brain mechanism is  physical machine ,and impulses are the natural resources for producing thoughts, physical activities(any work ,angry, laugh, cry, sex, fight, afraid, run, talk etc.), storing, spontaneous generating thought without outside impulses and reciting of memory etc. Therefore cells of 3fe0 brain of various zone are having different potentiality to retaining and discharging of processing  impulses, and discharging of various processing impulses from gyri feel in a media is called mind which is relating to the potentiality and character of man or on the other word potentiality of man. It is clear that a temperament media which flow over all brain cells through out the brain that is called mind. But mind has spontaneous flow and can receive every processing impulse as per its’ choice from brain cells at any time (in sleeping time also) and makes feel one accordingly as per every one realization. Choice of mind means concentrate of type of impulses or thoughts floating on it. One is reacting to every impulse coming form outside depends upon type of concentrate of thoughts floating in mind .This is the measuring scale of attraction intelligent or repulsion intelligent or foolish as well as happy and unhappy feeling.

It is also observed that physical mechanism of every science analyzed in laboratory is connected with temperaments   mechanism .However various ways are created by so many super man called prophet or incarnation or Guru in various place, language and age through out the world to know about source of mind and control of mind for feeling happiness is called religion.

Religion-Religion is a way to know about play and source of temperaments evolved in mind, and meaningful adjustment of various temperaments for life and growth with effulgence of personality both individually and collectively.

Therefore religion is temperament science and its proper utilization in every field of society will draw refine and happy human civilization. Therefore so many organizations and spiritual centres are working for imparting proper utilization of temperaments for individual and collective happy lives. But due to less highlights about proper benefits of temperament science for career, prosperity, knowledge, social establishment and happy life maximum people of the world are taking religion as blind faith, superstition or unknown about religion. However it to be proved practically that religion is a temperament science for which men will accept and benefited accordingly.

Source of temperament-Outside impulses are entering to brain through outer sensor organs like-eye, ear, nose, tonge and skin and processing in cerebral cortex area and one reacting accordingly as per mind situation (instinct and habit). Now it is clear that every one feels present of temperaments in mind and outside behind of every physical function, and scientists all over the world also searching the source of temperament in the name of “Big Bang”.

Religions show the management and source of temperament practically through feel.see and hear. How it is possible may discuss below.

Nervous and hormonal system ( glands) regulate the physical activities of man by coordinating each other  through impulse or temperament media, but pineal gland which present in brain has no longer function as per medical science. But as per religion it has vital function to regulate the temperament for improving the attraction activities. Active pineal gland creating radiant vibration which help to active the gyri bearing potentiality of  positive thought in brain  and break the negative traits of chromosome of cells through out the body with coordinating nervous and hormonal system, as a result concentrate of negative thought ( idle, foolishness, passionate sex, betray, treacherous, angry, malice, defiance etc ) will be diluted in mind, and mind draw towards right brain where positive thought are discharging from  gyri through processing of every outside impulses.Continuos flow of mind over right brain help to grows higher consciousness through brain system which recognize and manage of  every negative thought evolved in mind by spontaneous or outside impulses. Higher consciousness of mind choose the temperaments of happiness in right brain system and makes one feel     happiness in day to day professional life means mind become source itself. That is the source of temperament. It is calm, steady and perfect stage of mind, on the other word “Existence of nothing” or “Black Hole” and its’ physical stage is Glow before forming of atom or cell. Therefore source of temperament can feel in mind is called happiness, hear with ear is called sound and see with naked eye is called glow.

It is very remarkable that one may be vibrate own pineal glad by various way, but easy way to recite the ‘Holy Name” without uttering sound along with remembering  the “Holy Statue” of own community’s Man God   normally with keeping adherence   is easy way to vibrate the pineal glad.

Though, yet such feeling is not proved in laboratory, but taste of sugar is part of science. Then feeling of source of temperaments is also science. Now a day medical science is developing, therefore such truth of existence of temperament may be proved through laboratory analysis as follow-

A-May takes snap of normal and vibrating pineal gland to know about function of pineal gland.

B-May takes sound and vibration of brain of normal pineal gland and vibrating pineal gland to know about play of pineal gland.

C- Symptom of vibrating pineal gland is as follow as per author realization.

1-      Vibrate the area of junction of two eyes and root of the nose like evolve of bubble in water and burst automatically.

2-      Appear circle with rising sun color in eye focus when one winking the eye frequently to the sky or any solid area.

3-      Feel of spontaneous thrilling through out body along with brain like abnormal blood circle in supper skin after irregular time interval.

4-      Emanate glow from junction of two eyes and root of the nose having minute particles with high speed ocher color like spray of liquid ocher color for painting through machine.

5-        Feeling  release of  air from confined area in forehead.

Above laboratory taste may clarify the truth of religion in term of science and torching the human stake for happy living. Hope scientists in medical science, chemistry and physics all over the world may heed a glance about above truth for find a peace and happy way for human civilization, because science is accepted universally.

Therefore “Holy book” of all communities is book of temperament science, because it helps to improve the mind, health, production, productivity and distribution system. Lack of utilization of science is ancient age, exactly ignoring of temperament science (religion) is dance of poverty, ignorance and violence in any age.

Role of attraction thought- Attraction thought is attraction intelligence. Attraction intelligence creates and executes the refine social systems hindering to repulsion acts in every field of society such as –

A-Governance system, B-Cultivation, C-Industry, D-Trading, E- Education, D-Service sector etc. to establish harmony, distinctiveness and liberty among world people and   can help to blow an “Existentialism” wave thought in world wide society to utilize natural resources, time, production, productivity, human resources in apex level to fulfill the existential needs in latest convenient form, and makes feel source of temperaments generally is reality of religion.

The Study of Religion Psychology

May 7th, 2011

Religion psychology is the psychological study of religious experiences defined scientifically. Historically, religion psychology focused on a belief system that drove a way of life, usually of entire societies. But in the last couple of decades, religion is becoming less a way of believing and more a way of living. Simply put, it is impossible to understand how people think without also understanding their religious beliefs.

The fields of religion and psychology both enter realms of the unseen and until now, have done so in entirely different scopes of academia. Psychology began as a formal, scientific field of study approximately 100 years ago with Sigmund Freud, who realized that behavior is primarily driven by the subconscious. Religion psychology has been in existence in one form or another for a long time and has been studied as theology.

The psychological study of religion, or religion psychology, is a significant area of psychology and relevant to the understanding of people as a whole and as individuals.  Religion psychology offers material for the array of attitudes, coping mechanisms and other phenomena of interest to the field of psychology. It also challenges the field to find ways to conduct research that is scientific and meaningful. Thinking more abstractly, the undeniable link between psychology and religion continues to more strongly define psychology with philosophy through history.

There are several degree programs that are available that will prepare psychologists to specialize in this field. Because it is a rare specialty, degree programs are more broad. The most important focus when choosing a degree program is the accreditation of the program, whether or not the program meets your career goals and the long-term value of the program. You can tailor your degree plan to include religion psychology, even if you are pursuing a basic psychology degree.

Religion psychology is very new as a field of study in mental health and will inevitably find its place in the field of psychology, along with the rest of the social sciences. Defining religion in a way that is scientifically measurable, either quantifiably or qualitatively, is the purpose of this field. Also, studying how religion influences behavior in groups and individuals is an important aspect.

Aspects Of The Mormon Religion

April 10th, 2011

The Mormon religion is similar to Christianity, but differs from it in some important aspects. It is formally known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Fundamentalist Mormons believe in polygamy. A woman is currently protesting California’s laws against polygamy, calling them unconstitutional. She was raised as a fundamentalist Mormon, and is married to a man who has other wives, one of whom is her biological sister. Besides this extreme form of Mormonism, there are certain common beliefs held by the believers of this faith.

It is considered a restoration of the original church which was established by Jesus Christ. The founder of this religion, Joseph Smith, is considered by believers to be the prophet Christ entrusted with this responsibility. Let’s take a look at some of the aspects of this religion-

1. Mormonism differs in many ways from Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox Christianity. The spiritual decay which happened to the church originally established by Jesus Christ is linked to these orthodoxies, because his teachings were altered by them.

2. Mormons believe that Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation. They follow the Bible, but believe that there are errors in it. These mistakes have been corrected in the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price, which are their other holy books.

3. They observe a health code which is known as the Word of Wisdom. Under it, they abstain from consuming alcohol, coffee, tea, and tobacco.

4. Followers donate a tithe of ten percent on their income every year, and also perform volunteer service in church.

5. Members must also set aside one day of the week, which is usually Monday, for a Family Home Evening. On this day, they study gospel principles together as a family. They also participate in non-religious activities.

6. Common practices include refraining from working on Sunday, if possible. Members of the church are encouraged to marry and have children, resulting in large families.

7. Education is important under this religion as a means of growth. Believers are encouraged to engage in missionary work.

8. Members are encouraged to be prepared for any disaster, including economic hardships. This religion does not use the cross as a symbol of faith.

I’ve Figured Out President Obama’s Religion

March 22nd, 2011

It’s A New One That Fits Him Well

by Michael D. Hume, M.S.

I’ve been hearing a lot of talk lately about President Obama’s religion (if any). A recent poll discovered that a high and rising number of Americans believe Mr. Obama is a Muslim. This prompted a strong protest from a White House spokesperson, who claimed the president is “obviously a Christian,” based on the fact that he does things like meet regularly with spiritual advisors (things that a Muslim would also do, as would a Buddhist or a Hindu or a Navajo medicine man).

You can see where this large segment of the public got it wrong, of course. Mr. Obama made remarks defending the proposed “Ground Zero Mosque” at a Ramadan dinner at which he spoke. He does deliver a lot of speeches to Muslim audiences, and in fact his first interview as president was granted not to CNN or Fox News, but to Al-Jazeera, the Islamic network in the Middle East. His father was a Muslim from Kenya, and his mother was a “non-believer,” which is what I guess we now call atheists.

Mr. Obama did attend Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s Trinity Church in Chicago for more than two decades. And while this church has been called “Christian,” I’ve heard it leans more toward something called “Black Liberation Theology,” which sounds to me more like an economic philosophy (kinda like Marxism with a racial twist) than a religion at all.

I don’t know much, but as far as I know, “Christians” typically are defined by a belief in this guy “Jesus,” who is a guy to whom Mr. Obama almost never refers.

When the wacky right-wing fear mongers in the press (both of them) brought out some of the more inflammatory, anti-American quotes delivered from the pulpit by Rev. Wright, Mr. Obama (then a presidential candidate) famously “threw him under the bus” and disavowed having heard or seen any evidence of such hateful ranting in that church. Some of us found that incredible, considering Mr. Obama claimed he and his family had been faithful church-goers there for over twenty years.

That, possibly because focus groups indicated you had to be a “Christian” to get elected.

So as I turned all that over in my mind, I was struck by the fact that Mr. Obama has his own, new religion. I see this new religion as based on such things as polls and focus groups. This is a president who is very generous with his beliefs. He’s willing to be whatever you, the voter, need him to be in order to continue giving him the support he needs to transform our nation from a bunch of money-grubbing capitalist pigs to the socialist Utopia long desired by the far Left in America. So right now, he will label himself “Christian,” and if the political wind changes, he might later, some other time, be a Muslim or something else.

That is one flexible religion.

I will call Mr. Obama a “Polichristian.”

But clearly, he’s also a big supporter of another religion he’s inventing himself, and which he’d like to encourage all of us to embrace.

I’ll call that one “Socialislam.”

Learn About Traditional Religion of the Alur People in Uganda:

March 10th, 2011

If Christianity didn’t come I don’t now where Africa would be right now. Some say that Christianity brought ham than good; others say it brought good that ham. It is up to you to judge after reading this article about the traditional briefs of Alur People in Uganda.

The Alur people are found in Northwestern Uganda in the West Nile province. The have managed to maintain their culture although western culture is eating their at a breakneck speed.Among the traditional briefs I found interesting is their traditional religion and on this article I will summarize it as follows.

The religious rituals of worship among the Alur people were cultivated and protected by the Bandwa, the Jupa Jogi and Jupa Jok.These were in effect the Alur equivalents of the clergy. The equivalent of God was known as Jok.The manifestations of jok were more often than not in personal terms. Thus Jok could be male or female, young or old and so on. But sometimes Jok could be conceived of in non personal forms, for instance, as a situation.

The ultimate nature of Jok, however, was quite unknown.Among the Alur, worship was not routine such as every morning, evening or on Sundays and Fridays. It was necessitated by misfortunes of one kind or another which required that Jok should be appeased. The Alur people believed that misfortunes or disease were not natural consequences. To them misfortunes and disease were caused and the causes took different forms.

Spiritual entities or dead ancestors could demand attention, food, beer, meat and some other forms of comfort by inflicting punishments on the living in terms of deadly diseases, misfortunes or some slight sickness which, if not recognized and appropriately attended to, could become dangerous. This could take the form of dumbness, paralysis of the body or just part of it, mental breakdown etc.

In the event of misfortune like sickness, the family head together with his brother or two associates would go to a diviner known as Julam bira, jolam wara or Anjoga to have the misfortune diagnosed. The diviner would employ the various instruments at his disposal to trace the cause of the trouble. He would then advise on the appropriate measures to take to avert the misfortune. Misfortune was said to be caused by evil spirits or by evil persons who by use of magic, could Harm otherwise health person

Religion and Theology

February 26th, 2011

Despite the advancements which have been made in the modern life, many aspects of life have worsened than they were sometimes back. In this case, in spite of the benefits brought about by technological advancements; there are unavoidable pains that need to be addressed in order to live a life that reflects Christian values. In this relation, we need to live within our margins to avoid contaminating our lives. It is no doubt that, the present life has been streamlined by progresses in technology but this has caused a lot of pain and stress to the people in 20th century.

A point worth noting is that, even in earlier days there were changes but these were slight upward linear changes as compared to the present skyrocketing pattern of exponential changes. As a result of this, the present world is encountering limits in terms of energy used in new technologies and increased health problems brought about by pollution and changed cultural patterns. God created nights and days so that human beings should work on day time and sleep at night; but introduction of electricity and light in particular has made me to over utilize my energy by working even at night.  Additionally, as a member of the current generation; am going beyond limits by working on the Sabbath day that was created purposely for people to rest. In present life, I have been chasing money by working very hard day and night but this has resulted to lack of concentration, fatigue and stress. Therefore, the money I had gotten is all used in medication as I cannot be able to continue in that health situation.

As a result of progress pressures have increased on churches, friendships, relationships and family relations resulting to loss of ground in my social life. In this case, most of my time is used in working hence having no or inadequate time with my family resulting to loosening of social bonds. On the other hand, I have devoted most of my time and energy in doing worldly work rather than cultivating my relationships with God and fellow men. Importantly, the need to sustain my life in the current ever changing economic times have, made me to work hard beyond my limits. In this case, I usually overload myself by working even at those times I am supposed to be resting. This in turn results stress and depression which affect my health socially, physically and psychologically. Further, I am overloaded emotionally and mentally whenever I have nothing to invest or no work; which affects my psychological and social life.

As a result of technological advancements, there has been wide range of employment opportunities. In this case, my manager requires me to perform at my best and since I do not want to loose a job; I end up performing beyond my limits. Additionally, progress has brought about education and many of us are pursuing degrees and diplomas. On this basis, the need to pursue many courses both domestic and international in order to secure a promotion in my workplace have gone beyond margins in terms of concentration. As a result of this, there is increased fatigue, stress, need for money to cater for the education, and expectations. All these in return affect my body functioning process where I become resentful and have physical and nervous breakdown.

In addition, we usually have physical limits but as an athlete and footballer; I usually go beyond these limits because of competition. As a result of this, I experiences fatigue, loss of energy and physical tiredness. Further, technology has increased production of goods and services which has resulted to establishment of industries. In this relation, as part of investing my capital I go beyond my limits in these productions resulting to pollution of our environment hence diseases, drought and famine. Moreover, I even do not find time to eat adequately because of work schedule and programs hence resulting to weakening of my body due to loss of health. It is of importance to note that, I have jeopardized my life and health status by working in conditions that are very harsh like very high temperatures in industries and working in chemicals related industries among others.

As a result of this, I have developed a plan on how to protect my physical health, time and finances. In this case, I have planned my time in such a way that all my activities will get adequate time. In this case, if it’s working I have to save time to be with my family, have a rest and get some time to go to work. On this basis, no activity will be neglected. On the other hand, I should work in conditions that are contusive and not jeopardizing my health for pay. I will need to rest since exhaustion would cause health complications as a result of stress and depression. Further, I will have to plan well for my finances to avoid being bankrupt and also spending too much money on my health. By this, I will save the little I get and work at my level best to avoid loosing my job.

Sacred Animals in Hindu Religion

February 23rd, 2011

Of the many queer customs and beliefs prevalent among the Hindus, this may be found interesting and worthy of deep consideration. A really good and pious Hindu would not dare to do certain actions forbidden by the sacred laws going by the name of Dharma Sastras of Manu whose duty it was to lay down rules for the different Hindu Communities to follow and which no Hindu could transgress.

Certain animals and plants, though causing trouble to people, are considered sacred in Hindu Religion. Among animals, the cow, the cat, the squirrel, the monkey, the brahmani-kite, etc., are considered sacred; and from among the vegetable kingdom, the asvatha tree (Ficus religiosa), the coconut tree, and the bael tree the tulasi plant (Ocymum sanctum), are considered holy and hence should not be destroyed. A pious Hindu would rather let an asvatha tree continue to grow on the wall of his house or in a crevice of the rampart round the well in his garden and then destroy it. He would not dare to cut down the coconut trees to clear the place for the purpose of house building.

The principle or sentiment underlying the custom is based on certain reasons that do not deserve to be brushed aside as superstitious. Accumulated experiences of ages have taught the people this principle or sentiment, by whatever name one may choose to call it, and hence we may have with advantage try to understand its rationale.

According to the Hindu Religion, Manu, has laid down that the life of a Brahmin (educative class caste) is many times more precious than the life of a kshatriya (warrior class caste), a vaisya (farmer class caste) or a sudra (lower caste) and the reason for the same is, that a really true Brahmin has really nothing personal and everything he has and every action he does are for the benefits for humanity at large. So it goes without saying that he should be preserved even at the cost of the sacrifice of many a selfish people, self-centred and living on the labours of others like so many parasites on other trees and plants. The same is the case in the animal and in the vegetable kingdoms also. There are plants that are veritable benefactors of men and animals. By their very existence, they purify the atmosphere and create healthy surroundings for the animals to live in good health. The destruction of one such trees and plants would mean the deprival of a portion of the benefit, which the animals were enjoying.

It has been said that a man exhausted by mental strain would recuperate his vitality and strength, if he would go to a coconut grove and remain there seated for a time, leaning against one of the trees. The same or different advantageous properties may be found in other trees and plants held sacred by the Hindu sages of old. The ban put on certain vegetables such as onions, may be due to hygienic and various other reasons.

To conclude, the pious Hindus consider the destruction of certain animals and plants sinful and this in consequence accounts for Indians considering certain animals and plants sacred.

Belief In Extraterrestrials: Science Or A Cult Religion?

February 2nd, 2011

There are those who suggest that our obsession with ancient astronauts, UFOs, SETI (the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence), and the like is nothing more than a religious fever under a different disguise. Instead of looking towards the heavens for salvation and ultimate truths in God, we reject God and instead we look towards the heavens and seek out new intelligences and new civilizations to boldly lead us on the path to a universal brotherhood; aliens that in their eternal wisdom will show us the one true path and give us all the benefits of their experiences and knowledge, knowledge that which gives us warp drives, a universal truth and justice, and the golden brick road that leads towards the cosmic way (the way of the cosmos?).

Balderdash! Well, sort of.

God, assuming a God, is about supernatural explanations for creations like the origin of our planet and of us.

God is supposedly about good vs. evil; heaven vs. hell, salvation vs. damnation, and a warm fuzzy eternal afterlife.

God is about morality (never mind the lack of His own).

We don’t look to aliens for creation mythology; the afterlife; and our moral codes.

Certainly SETI (Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence) scientists do not sit in worship at their radio telescope cathedrals that great alien in the sky that they seek. Seek they do, but not to worship. However, some do go a bit over-the-top in suggesting the types of societies they are likely to find and communicate with – it’s their version of the dawning of the Age of Aquarius. See below for more elaboration.

Assuming ancient astronauts, and assuming ancient astronauts were aliens, then the peoples of those ancient times obviously worshiped said ancient astronaut aliens. However, people interested in ancient astronaut aliens today hardly worship that what takes their interest. It’s just another facet of SETI (even if traditional SETI professionals would be horrified at having the study of ancient astronauts lumped in with what they do).

UFOs are slightly different kettles of fish to SETI (well, sort of) or ancient astronauts; different horses of many other colours. One such colour – at least to most people – is the cultist ‘giggle factor’ or ‘silly season’ colour. To the minority of others, well, they (cultists) believe in the ‘space brothers’ and are usually called contactees and they form various – for lack of a better phrase – New Age themed UFO societies. They do indeed worship, if not quite as gods, at least as ultra advanced supreme beings, who, for all practical purposes are as close to godlike and perfect as makes no odds. All is peace and harmony and enlightenment and utopia and perfect health and beauty and eternal rainbows in and on the worlds (including Venus and Saturn, etc.) of the ‘space brothers’. The ‘space brothers” collectively make even our most saintly of saints look like hardened criminals behind bars if not on death row!

UFO ‘space brother’ contactees or cultists often ‘preached’ their sermons of gloom and doom while offering salvation and enlightenment to the great unwashed via the messages they conveyed from those uppity-up pure-in-heart-and-mind aliens. Somehow the ‘space brothers’ offered us the one true pathway away from our destruction, often literally, as in the end of the world.

If I had some $ $ $ for every time the end of the world had been predicted, lets just say my bank manager and the tax office would both be pleased. I’m sure not a year goes by, probably not even a month, without someone (not always by any means UFO cultists) calling out loud and clear that ‘The sky is falling; the end is here; prepare to meet thy doom’.  For those misguided beings who take one such ever ongoing prophecy seriously, it might, I guess, be more logical to put your salvation eggs in an extraterrestrial basket carried around by UFOs. There’s way more evidence for the UFO ETH (ExtraTerrestrial Hypothesis) than for God. God hasn’t been seen (for at least 4000 years or so), tracked on radar, left physical trace marks on our environment, nor has He been filmed or photographed.

But some of these New Age Themed UFO societies can be hazardous to your health. The Heaven’s Gate group in 1997 were going to hitch a ride with this UFO concealed in the Hale-Bopp Comet as it swung around the Sun. There was one catch however – to get from terrestrial ground zero, to Hale-Bopp, you had to do yourself a fatal mischief. According to the “M*A*S*H” theme song, suicide maybe painless but it is still suicide. [There have been several other instances of mass suicide among the membership of religious cults – the Branch Davidians (Waco, Texas) and followers of Jim Jones and his People's Temple (Guyana) – but these had nothing to do with aliens.]

Other New Age themed UFO societies are more harmless to your physical health (not sure about your mental health however), like the Unarius [Educational Foundation] Society; the Etherean Society; the Aetherius Society, and dozens more, both major and minor.

It has got to be said that bona fide UFO investigators dislike these cultists for muddying the UFO waters and turning what should be serious study into a joke within the larger general community. Riding with your racially pure white ‘space brothers’ in their UFOs to visit their home worlds (which either no one has ever heard of or which scientists have proven to be hellish enough, way beyond incapable of supporting complex life) and delivering their New Age words of cosmic truth and wisdom is going to generate a lot more column inches in the tabloids than serious investigations will in the major metropolitan press.

Fortunately, these contactees, and the New Age contactee movement were primarily a 1950′s fad. While there are those still around, they now have little real impact or influence today. However, their damage has been done, and the UFO field can not totally shake off their immense contribution to the UFO ‘silly season’ ‘giggle’ factor.

In general however, serious UFO investigators who take the phenomena, well, seriously, most certainly do not worship whatever aliens, if any, may pilot said UFOs. I’ve never seen any evidence that UFO investigators are any different from the general population in terms of religious affiliation or church attendance.

However, part of the overall perception problem doesn’t lie solely with UFO contactees spreading the word about their ‘space brothers’. Some of the ‘aliens as the new religion’ perception must rest with some of the more serious scientist ‘alien hunters’ who seek out new intelligent life forms and their civilizations.

Some of these scientists are partly to blame for this mythology citing as a rational, caught up in their enthusiasm, for their SETI quest, that contact and communication with extraterrestrial intelligence could lead to a Golden Age where we would be given the Encyclopaedia Galactica, the cure for cancer, and pollution free energy. They would, by being their own best example, show us how to avoid war and nuclear Armageddon; give us the ways and means of achieving global peace and disarmament – double balderdash, squared (well, sort of). It’s almost a (albeit slightly tuned down) version of the messages contactees spread.

Personally, I don’t think aliens are going to lift us up by our bootstraps – we’ve got to do that, all by our lonesome. So, whether it is contactees and New Age UFO Cult societies or SETI scientists promoting the salivation-from-the-skies ideas to help justify their work, it’s, IMHO, pure pie-in-the-sky wishful thinking.

What of the general public? There is widespread interest in, and believe in the existence of, advanced extraterrestrial life. Does that mean that millions are leaving their religion; not attending church, instead setting up telescopes at home or go UFO hunting? The truth may be out there, but I seriously doubt its any threat to either organised religion or people’s supernaturally-themed religious convictions.

Okay, so balderdash (well sort of) aside, yes, there is some truth to the perception that belief in aliens can be taken as a form of religion, well quasi-religion, but I see no real evidence that this is in any way detracting from societies’ established supernatural-based religions. I imagine many individuals believe in both aliens and God. The two aren’t mutually exclusive. Some people believe in God, not aliens. Others, like me, suggest aliens are infinitely more a probable viability than a supernatural creator God.

Finally, any organisation trying to claim aliens as the centrepiece of their ‘church’ is going to find getting those standard religious tax concessions rather hard to come by!

At least believers in aliens don’t have a history of imprisoning, torturing, murdering or executing, exiling, ridiculing, etc. those who have interests and beliefs more focused in a down-to-earth direction. Alien hunters don’t demand you have some of your private parts snipped off or that you have to observe various foods, dress, time of day/day of week, sexual or other personal relationship ritual do’s and don’ts. SETI scientists have no ‘thou shall or shall not’ demands; ufologists demand no animal sacrifices or attendance at Sunday weekly UFO conventions. There is no such a thing as an infallible alien bible. No hymns are sung in praise of ET. You don’t have to, every hour on the hour, face towards the constellation of Orion, bow down, and give thanks to the Chancellor of the Klingon Empire for your very existence. And nobody wears the Southern Cross on a chain around their neck.

SETI scientists don’t engage in a Holy War against UFO buffs or vice versa; ancient astronauts enthusiasts don’t hold an Inquisition against SETI scientists or vice versa; UFO buffs don’t have Crusades against those who like the idea that ancient aliens assisted a fledging human race thousands of years ago or vice versa. Alien hunters may not always be one happy family, but compared to organised religion(s).

Also, alien hunters don’t go doorknocking trying to convert the unbelievers!

Alas, alien hunters won’t get to heaven (not that there is such a place) by discovering ET, but at least they won’t go to hell (no such place either) if they don’t! There is no 11th Commandment along the lines of ‘Thou shall seek out my other creations among the firmament’; nor a 12th, ‘Thou shall not worship my other creations among the firmament’!

Absolutely finally, if aliens are the new religion, well, they have light years left to travel before overtaking God, and Company as a force to be reckoned with.

But wait – an afterthought. Popularity isn’t the same thing as worship or belief, but in terms of perceptions of the God vs. alien possibilities, despite church attendance, we probably spend more time interacting with aliens than with God – if one interacts with God at all. Of course unless you are a professional astrobiologist or SETI scientist or an avid ufologist or one of those UFO abductees, you probably don’t interact with real aliens (or the concept of real aliens) either. However, over the course of a period of time, we tend to be exposed more to the concept of extraterrestrials than things Biblical; more often as not through films and TV shows. Certainly the amount of shelf space in book stores and libraries (home as well as public) devoted to aliens (usually sci-fi in the main) vis-à-vis the section devoted to religion – well, more people buy and read sci-fi than study their, or any other, religion. I know the Beatles got into hot water for claiming they were more popular than JC, but I’d bet a TV series featuring aliens gets higher ratings than one featuring Christianity.

The Decline of Religion in the United States and Its Negative Effects

January 29th, 2011

Religion has been an integral part of every culture since the dawn of human civilization; but in the United States today, the fastest growing religious faith is no religion at all.  Various religions have come and gone over time, and some have ballooned up to massive followings that encompassed a significant portion of the entire world.  Our morality, laws, culture and identity have come from a sense of oneness with our faith as a nation; but what happens to our society when we abandon religion altogether?  Drug and alcohol abuse, suicide, serious mental disorders and depression have all been steadily increasing over the same time period that faith has been fading away.  The decline of religion and its practice in the United States over the last few decades has had a detrimental impact on American society as a whole.

For many years, studies have been performed to find out if religion can make a person live longer.  What they have found, is that religious people live an average of 8 years longer than the population that has no faith ties (5).  There are many reasons attributed to this effect, including stress levels and being part of a community; but the results are the same regardless of the perceived causes.  It also doesn’t matter what the faith being practiced is; Christianity, Judaism, Muslim, Buddhist, even the newer religions like Scientology all yield the same results leading one to question what these people possess that Agnostics and Atheists don’t.  People who do practice a faith will tell you that ‘God’ is sustaining them, but how can this be if they all worship a different higher power?

Stress levels are an accepted contributing factor that most people can agree on, because a faithful person has a higher sense of peace with the world around them.  When a person believes that a higher power is in charge of the universe, life doesn’t seem quite so chaotic and left to chance.  Tragedies become more a part of natural order, and they are more likely to enjoy the good times in their life because they see them as a gift.  The ‘sense of order’ to the things around them makes life less stressful, and it gives them a place to turn when they have problems in their own life.  People without a religious faith usually see life as a series of tragedies with intermittent periods of boredom and stagnation.

Religious people tend to be a part of much larger community, with many friends they see at church on a weekly basis.  This large support system can also be considered a contributing factor to religious people living longer.  There are lots of social clubs and other events that Agnostics and Atheists can belong to, but nothing quite carries the same weight as a church group that meets regularly through a person’s entire life.  There are several variables that could explain the longevity of the religious faithful, but many of those variables can’t be substituted with other activities and they don’t provide the sense of peace that having faith does.

All these things add up to a healthier lifestyle for those who practice a faith, and this also has effects outside the longevity issue.  The occurrence of social problems like drug and alcohol abuse, suicide and depression go down with the introduction of faith in a person’s life (7).  Again; the causes have a lot to do with a sense of peace, community and a place to turn when they experience problems in their life.  Health and longevity are two things that improve with a strong faith, so what happens to society when religion declines throughout the population?

The Decline of Religion

During the 1960s and 1970s, there were many social changes that took root in the United States.  Evolution began being taught in public schools, and the youth of American began to question the religious values they had been raised with.  The movements in the 60s and 70s weren’t specifically religious in nature, but they did cause the younger generation to rebel against their parents in almost every conceivable way.  As this generation grew up they still had faith in a higher power, but they stopped going to church regularly and that led to the problems with our generation.  Conflicts between emerging science and religion, along with religious values being removed from government and school have led to a serious decline in religious practice.

The American Religious Identification Survey (2) is conducted every few years and it shows the trends of religious practice in the United States.  Over the last 20 years, almost every religion that is practiced in the U.S. has steadily declined in percentage of the population.  I say ‘almost’ every religion, because Agnostics and Atheists have been growing in leaps and bounds; and these are the two groups that don’t practice a religious faith.  Christians, being by far the largest percentage of the population, have experienced the largest declines; while other religions have only suffered small losses due to their small size to begin with.  According to Adherents (1), this is not a trend happening everywhere in the world; it is centered in highly industrialized nations like the United States.

Many current Christian faiths in the U.S. claim to be on the rise, and there are pockets of growing faiths that have seen increases.  Non Denominational Christians have in fact grown as the mainstream Christian faiths have begun to dwindle, but the percentage of the population they represent doesn’t come close to covering the losses from the other faiths.  Mormonism believes itself to be the fastest growing religion in the country; however the numbers they pick up closely match the numbers they lose through attrition, leading to a steady population representation that is still falling.  The small portion of the population that practices the eastern religions like Judaism and Muslim, have had some increases and some losses leading to a net loss for the whole group.

The number of people who now practice no faith at all has quadrupled in percentage of the population over the last 20 years.  This number is troubling for those that believe faith is an essential part of a healthy life, and it doesn’t appear to be a trend that will reverse itself in the near future.  One out of every five people in this country no longer believes in God and doesn’t attend any type of religious institution.  An additional two out of every five people still believes in a higher power, but don’t attend a church; they also no longer place an emphasis on teaching religious values to their children, so the next generation will be even less religious.

The Rise of Social Problems

During the same 20 year time period that religion has been declining, a number of social afflictions have been steadily increasing.  No one is claiming that the lack of religious faith is the cause of these problems, but it is making them worse.  Without a faith to turn to in times of crisis many people turn to drugs or alcohol and in extreme cases, suicide.  Church goers have a community of supporters to lean on with a collective set of problem solving skills that include a belief that a higher power is watching out for them.  They also rely on a sense of order that things are going the way they are supposed to, even if it doesn’t seem like it at the time.

Drug and alcohol abuse are problems that have plagued society for hundreds of years, and the instances of these problems waxes and wanes with many different factors.  Some people have a genetic predisposition to addiction that they struggle with their entire lives, but others just abuse these substances when they need an escape from the troubles of everyday life.  Over the last two decades drug and alcohol abuse have steadily increased per capita of the population, according to the Department of Justice (3); while the occurrence of these problems has remained low in the religious portion of the population.  This makes the evidence that the two are linked; quite compelling.  Substance abuse will always be a part of society, no matter what we do to quell it; but the decline of religious values is exaggerating the problem.

Suicide is the ultimate end game for many people that just cannot deal with the problems in life any longer.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide has also been increasing over the last two decades (4); but the link between religion and suicide is even more compelling.  Social problems of all kinds do exist in the religious population, but not to the same degree; and suicide rates among the religious is very low (6).  Religion provides a sense of purpose for most people that goes beyond the short term day to day dilemmas that we all face, and this can help many people disregard suicide as an answer with a long term sense of order.

Severe mental disorders have exploded in the United States recently (8), and although it’s difficult to say for sure how big religion’s part is; the lack of religion certainly isn’t helping.  The field of mental diagnosis is relatively new and still expanding at a rapid rate.  Twenty years ago, hardly anyone was diagnosed with a mental disorder and no one had even heard of bi-polar.  Today, we have begun to believe that everything wrong with every person is some type of mental problem that can be fixed with a psychologist and some medication.  Depression is a whole different animal, and it has been a known problem for far longer than most others.  The occurrence of depression is also on the rise; and for obvious reasons, religious people struggle with it less than the rest of the population.

Other Problems Without Religion

Rehabilitation is also an issue with religion declining, especially since the government sees a moral dilemma in directing tax payer funds to a religious based institution.  Programs designed to help people get off drugs and alcohol are far more likely to succeed if they include a belief in a higher power (7).  Secular based rehabilitation just isn’t nearly as successful; and as religion declines, the good rehabilitation programs will become fewer and further between.  Prison rehab also suffers at the loss of religion, with prisoners being less likely to commit crimes after release with a religious backing.  As churches decline, funding for these programs that comes from the parishioners will continue to dry up.

There are other solutions that we have tried to solve some of the social problems we are currently experiencing, but with limited success.  In the case of depression, pharmaceuticals can be prescribed to help alleviate the symptoms; but they also present a whole slew of additional side effects with unpredictable results.  Most people who take some kind of drug for depression have complaints that the drugs make them feel ‘empty’ and emotionless, while others say they have far worse consequences like suicidal tendencies.  There is a dizzying array of prescriptions available for depression, and a psychiatrist may try several different ones to see how they affect the individuals body chemistry.  Drugs, however, can only mask the symptoms of depression without actually addressing the underlying root causes of the problem.

Serious mental disorders can also have other possible solutions, but the biggest problem with most mental disorders today is misdiagnosis.  The afflictions of the mind and their causes is still a developing science that will take many more years to work out.  Right now though, the tendency is to diagnose everyone with some type of disorder; and most of them are treated with the same array of pharmaceuticals.  Religion can help to keep a person grounded when they have almost any mental disorder, but like drugs it won’t solve the problem.  Mental disorders present a serious ‘gray area’ in the grand picture of social problems, and now everyone believes they have one.

Our identity as a nation is deeply rooted in Christian tradition; from the Founding Fathers onward.  The last generation took it for granted that things like Christmas wouldn’t become controversies, and the manger scene would always be a familiar sight on the Capitol steps.  As religion has declined, there has been an increasing assault on everything that has to do with Christianity in the public arena.  With these cultural symbols being removed from society, the stigma has become one of anti religion and it is speeding the process up.  It’s no longer weird to not be a church attendee; now even saying you are Christian in public leads people to a certain conclusion about your mental aptitude.

Another alternative to modern church attendance is the new ‘mega church’ movement that only requires people to sit in front of their televisions on Sunday mornings.  It’s unclear if this type of worship will affect a person’s overall health, because it doesn’t involve the same sense of community with other parishioners.  Undoubtedly, there will be other forms of faith in the future; maybe even some that evolve through the internet.

The Connection and the Next Generation

Religion plays a fundamental part in a person’s health and wellbeing, and that disconnect with the general population is growing at an alarming rate.  Science and religion aren’t enemies, as science explains the ‘how’ and religion explains the ‘why’; but over the last few decades, science has greatly advanced leading people to believe they have to choose between the two.  There is also a growing misconception that the two accomplish the same requirements in a person’s health and wellbeing.  Religion won’t cure a major disease, and science can’t cure everything with drugs; we need both to progress as a complete culture with balance.

Social problems in the United States are partially based on the religious values we hold, just as every other nation faces various problems based on their religious tendencies.  Many other industrialized countries have declining faiths, and they also have an increasing rate in the social problems described above.  The generations that come after ours will have a whole new set of problems to face; and if religion continues to decline, social problems will continue to rise.  Between the loss of religious values, rising healthcare costs and socialized medicine on the horizon; the next generation may see the first drop in life expectancy in many years.

On the plus side, religion patterns rise and fall over long periods of time; so 30 or 40 years from now there may be a major religious resurgence.  In the mean time, science will continue to advance with new medications and theories about the mind.  Marriage and divorce rates also fluctuate along the same lines; as do political affiliations, and both of these factors also have a major impact on society as a whole.  We have enjoyed an extending life span and improving health for a very long time, but that time may be coming to an end in the short term.  The trends will reverse themselves eventually, but it will be the next generation that will have to shoulder the majority of the burden we leave behind.

Varying Views and Conclusions

During the course of my research, I interviewed several people from differing perspectives to gauge the views at opposite ends of the spectrum.  Their opinions on this issue were very telling, and the way they see the future is even more so.  Four individuals representing the various views have been selected and I asked all of them the same set of questions regarding the decline of religion and how it has affected society.  Diane Norquist is a practicing Roman Catholic, Shirley Porter is a non practicing Protestant, Cory Weis is an Agnostic and Jason Pachello is a strong Atheist.

As a Roman Catholic, Diane believes that religion is the main driving force behind modern civilization; and it’s decline would lead mankind to a very self destructive end.  She surrounds herself with a community of other Catholics and believes that religious values are actually increasing in our society and that the Catholic church is growing in the United States.  “I think many people are going back to church since 9-11, and the values from the 1950s are making a strong comeback”; she told me, “but there is a small group of non-believers who are fighting it”.

Shirley Porter left the Lutheran church several years ago and began attending ‘tele-church’ on Sunday mornings by watching a mega church broadcast.  She no longer has a community of fellow church goers that she knows personally.  “Religious values are definitely declining, and you can already see the results through civil unrest”; she commented, “things will continue to get worse until the end”.  A very dark view of society, but she still claims to be at peace with herself.

Agnostics are defined as a group that ‘doesn’t know’ about the existence of God, and they don’t attend a religious institution.  Cory Weis has been an Agnostic his entire life; never having attended a religious service and not being raised with any religious values.  “People can believe whatever they want to believe”; he said, “I don’t think it really has any impact on society”.  He also commented that religious values aren’t increasing or decreasing, but remaining about the same.  His circle of friends just doesn’t talk about religion, so he thinks that it isn’t really a hot topic with anyone.

Jason Pachello was raised Mormon, but completely rejected religious values many years ago; today he is a strong Atheist that firmly believes God does not exist.  “Religion is a virus that just won’t die because there will always be weak people who need to rely on it”; he told me very passionately, “society would be much better off if we would just abandon this archaic practice”.  Jason also believes that religion is growing out of control, despite science ‘disproving’ the bible and everything else religious.

People always tend to see the entire world through their own individual circumstances, and the four views here are no exception.  The numbers don’t lie though, religious practice is declining in the United States and it is having an impact on the social problems we are facing.  It’s impossible to say with any certainty what the future holds for the fate of religion or our society in the long term, but things will get worse before they get better.  We used to believe that society would always improve with time as man evolved to a more harmonious state; but without religion that may be impossible.
